Artist Statement
(Born in Switzerland, December 8, 1981)
I grew up in a small town in the mountains of Switzerland, near the village of St.Moritz,
which is a touristic resort for people from all over the world. As I was surrounded by
mountains and nature a great part of my youth was spent doing a lot of outdoor activities
and sports. I must have inherited my love for drawing and painting from my Dutch mother
whose whole family is artistically inclined. At 16 I had to decide on a profession, I chose
a 4-year apprenticeship as a draftsman. Although I enjoyed my studies mostly, I pursued my
hobby of painting during my free time, and on the encouragement of friends I had my first
show in January 1999 in a Hotel in St.Moritz. It proved to be a great success and many
enjoyed the new colorful Neocolor-Style. I have never stopped painting since that year.
I finished my apprenticeship as a draftsman, and those two years were very busy since I had
my studies and Art shows at the same time. In the Summer of 2001, after receiving my Diploma,
I decided to completely concentrate on Art and I moved to NYC to study at a professional
Art School.
I always felt great joy in painting portraits in all different kinds of ways; it is
fascinating to see the person looking at me as if I recreated that person. I always
challenge myself to bring out that persons character in the painting.
My collection, "Details of Nature in New York" means very much to me, since I found a new
way to express my surroundings the way I see them. I am now combining two passions:
photography and painting, with capturing moments and details one might not usually notice;
in so doing I create my own vision of the object with atmosphere and character in a painting.
Growing up surrounded by nature I guess I have always taken it for granted and it never
seemed to be very special to me. But living in a quite opposite kind of surrounding in a city
like New York, I suddenly found myself searching for nature and looking at it from a completely
different angle. It fascinated me how nature finds a way to grow in the unfriendliest places
and tries to break through man's world of concrete and metal. The contrast in this city is so
unique and captivating to me that I hope to be able to transmit to people through my paintings
my fascination with it and it's atmosphere, my love for Art as well as bringing out a side of
New York we might not yet have noticed.
Now moved on to Oregon, the surroundings are quite different again, beautiful nature and an
abundance of flowers and plants as I have never seen before. It inspired me to create a new
collection, reflecting the beauty and breathtaking variety of God's creation.
